I've found it so frustrating having to relog because SL has timed me out after I've got caught up with something outside of SL. I tried to get a solution using my trusty Google but failed. Then the knowlegable and ever-helpful Whimsy Winx dropped me a notecard with exactly what I needed. So I'd like to share this with you.

"Second Life will Time You Out, there are many anti-idle devices out there to keep you logged into Second Life, and hopefully you didn't pay for one, when there is a free lag free solution. These Anti-Idle device create "lag" which lose you and others down. If they have the option to be turned off, it still leaves the scripts running waiting to be turned back on.
To turn off idle timeout without the use of any scripts (in-world or out-world) do the following. Make sure you have the debug Client and Server menus available, you should see Client and Server next to Help if they are enabled.
If not hit Ctrl-Alt-Shift-D (Option-Ctrl-Shift-D for Mac users) to enable the Client and Server menus on your top tool bar and they will appear.
From the Client menu, choose Character. From the Character menu, choose Character Tests. From the Character Tests menu click on Go Away/AFK When Idle to remove the X next to it. You will never timeout from being idle now, this setting is persistent through logons."

First up...join the VAIN Inc group NOW! They opened the group enrolment a couple of days ago and it won't stay open for long. Once you've joined there is a whole host of treasures for you to grab, including furniture, skins, clothes, eyes...the list goes on *phew*

Then there's this cutest freebie from Baiatice *gush*

The doors open and close too...wow. Not only that but open up the clothes and you get the COMPLETE wardrobe...bags, shoes, hats, even a walking cane.

This is Grandma's Glitter Class (there's even lingerie lol)...love it!

Take a trip to Dove Swanson's sim, of Long Awkward Pose. She's having the maddest, most fun hunt that I've ever done...a poop hunt lool. There's 15 turds for you to find and a whole cesspit full of poses...indidivdual boy n girl poses, boy n girl ao's, couple n group poses. The hunt ends on 24th August.

This is one of the individual poses called Ssh. There are also some completely mad ones that'll make you chuckle.

If this isn't enough then there is a dead easy hunt going on at Lemania. Just collect the apples and you'll get a yummy 40's outfit plus two evening gowns.

Lastly, there's a needle hunt on the Adored sim. I need a lie down now!

Here's a neat little tutorial for framing your shots using Photoshop.

1. Open the file for the picture that you want to frame. Double-click its layer in the Layers Palette to unlock it so it isn't the background layer.

2. Making your mat:
a. Enlarge your canvas to make room for your mat: Image > Canvas Size and make it the dimensions you want the picture, including the frame, to eventually be. Making it too big won't hurt. Making it too small won't hurt either; you can always change it later.
b. Position your mat layer below your picture: Click the new layer icon next to the bin in the layers palette. Drag this new layer below the picture layer in your layers palette. This layer will be your mat. Double click the layer and label it "mat".
c. To colour your mat choose a shade for your foreground color in your toolbar. Alt-backspace to fill the layer with the colour. (What you do for your mat is completely flexible. I used a dark grey shade and made my noise mono-chromatic and about level 25.Using a lighter shade will make the effects more visible however.)
d. Put a design or texture on your mat: Filter > Noise > Add Noise .. Now let's do something to the noise. There are many ways you can alter the noise to get a cool result for your mat. I'll make some Wheat Thatch paper. Filter -> Brushstrokes -> Crosshatch. Here are the settings that I used for my wheat thatch texture.

3. Make your frame:
Do a LONG side first.
a. I am going to make a sculpted pewter frame for my picture. We will make one long side and then duplicate it for the other three sides. By doing this, we will ultimately have 4 layers for the frame. Click the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette to make a new layer. Using the rectangular marquee, select the area for one of the long sides of your frame.
b. Click your gradient tool and hold for a second, then choose the reflected gradient tool. Make white your foreground color and black your background. In the Reflected Gradient Options, choose "foreground to background". This will give you, in this case, the white -> black. Beginning in the middle of the area you selected, drag a reflected gradient across your frame. Hold Shift to make the gradient go at an exact right angle. I dragged mine horizontally. Ctrl-D to deselect.
(If you are new to this tool, take this opportunity to play with it a bit. Click back in your history palette to undo if you need to, but as long as you are messing in the selected area, you can't do too much damage. ) Ctrl-D to deselect.
c. Now sculpt it a little. Use the Rectangular Marquee again to make a smaller rectangle inside that one and do a linear gradient from right to left. Ctrl-D to deselect.
d. Drag the frame piece that you have made down to the "New Layer" icon to duplicate it. You need 4 copies, one for each side of your frame.
e. Rotate your frame pieces around so that they are surrounding your picture. Use Edit > Free Transform. Bring your pointer outside of the bounding box and it will turn into a little turning arrow. Hold the Shift key as you rotate the pieces. (What does holding the Shift key do?)
Be sure that you rotate them so that the gradients are going the right way so that they match up in the corners. If you care deeply about the shadows not looking right, you can fix them manually or with lighting effects when you are done, or you can use a different kind of frame on your next project. For now, I will not worry about this.
f. Proportion the space for your picture as you want it; we will trim the long ends of your frame next.

4. Miter your frame:
a. When you line up your frame pieces, be sure that they overlap completely as mine do here. You will see why in the next step.
b. Now trim off the parts of the frame that you do not need. Study the end result for a moment before you read the next part and see if you can figure out how to do it.
c. Choose the Polygonal lasso tool and click in one of the outside corners of the frame. Hold Shift, to constrain your selection to 45-degree increments and then click to the inside of that corner. Click over beyond the outside of the corner that you are getting rid of. Double-click to close the triangle.
d. In your layers palette, select the layer that has the part of the frame that you want to miter. Hit the Delete key. A mitered corner! Ctrl-D to deselect.
e. Once you get the extra overlapping parts of the frame deleted, get rid of the extra parts behind the frame.
f. Merge the layers of your frame by hitting Ctrl-E. Now your frame is all nailed together! Hehe!

6. Apply layer effects to give it that final 3D look:
a. You could call it quits before this, but this last step adds more realism to the project. Select the mat layer in the layers palette and then Layer > Effects. Try a drop shadow with its various settings.. Try the different bevel/emboss settings.
b. Now select the frame layer and do effects there too.

Voila!

And here's the colour shot with a light mat so you can see the texture better.

My sim was being redeveloped over the last couple of weeks so I've been in temporary accommodation...but now I've moved yaaayyy!!

Thank you to The Loft for a fantastic freebie - the Catero Living Room. The set includes the seating, which has menu-driven animations, the tables, lamps, and rug. Also, not shown, are two pictures and a candle set. Unbelievable eh? I was then able to splash out on a Ming vase by Mezzanine Qi.

I couldn't resist the Sunday morning bed by Eremia Woodbury of Revival. I picked up the freebie floor cushions while I was at it. Unfortunately they are all no mod so I could only use pose balls rather than scripts but hey...not the end of the world :)

Mmm...I know you're wondering "How on earth do you do a quick change?". Well this knowledge is essential for models cos you often have to change from one look to another entirely different look in a matter of seconds. So all you need to do is create a new folder in your inventory and put EVERYTHING in the folder - skin, hair, clothes, lashes, the lot. Then all you have to do is click on the folder and select Add To Outfit from the menu and then select the folder you were previously wearing and choose Take Off Items. Ta dah...you have changed without compromising your modesty...lol.

A mix of bright colours is the next ingredient - here I've gone for Last Call's Marie Helene Tied Linen jacket, tinted yellow and my very own bow top. I've teamed these with Last Call's Ingrid High Waisted jeans and Shiny Things' red Party Pumps. Another essential is a serious shoulder bag with pens sticking out and at the ready. The CRAP Journalistic Bag is a perfect choice. To finish off I've chosen the Muse Classic Tank watch and a heart charm bracelet (a group gift of unknown origin).

Fashion model photos

Find a plain, green background set to "Full Bright". Don't worry, we'll be getting rid of the background later. You can either use a bought or homemade photostudio (there are freebie ones out there also) or just use two modified box prims. Face east or west.

Get your look together. If it's for a portfolio then you want to emphasise your av's body...so don't make it too fussy but let your style show through.

Choose a modelling pose. Again, if it's for a portfolio, make sure your hands are away from your body and definitely not sticking into your body (trying to find these poses are a matter of trial and error...took me ages cos I've got a big arse:P).

Force the sun to sunrise or sunset, depending on how you're facing. Take pics. Save them to your hard drive. Use the camera angle tools to get multiple views of your avatar. Try different poses, try looking up or down on your av.

Use your preferred graphics editing software to open up the images. I use Photoshop. Choose an image and crop it down to the size. For an SL portfolio then 512 X 512 or 512 X 256 pixels are recommended. The game will resize everything to that anyway and other sizes end up stretched or distorted once uploaded.

Make sure that the image is in RGB color mode. To switch to RGB color mode, click on RGB Color under the Image> Mode menu.

Add a Channel Mixer adjustment layer (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Channel Mixer). In the Channel Mixer window, check the Monochrome checkbox and set the Red to 200% and the Green to -200%. Don't close the Channel Mixer window yet!

Now drag the Constant slider towards the right until the object is a 100% white; not gray. Don't go overboard with the constant setting. If the constant is set too high, the images' edge detail will be lost.

If after you apply the Channel Mixer adjustment layer, the green areas are not completely black then select the Background layer and open the Hue/Saturation tool (Image> Adjustments> Hue/Saturation or Ctrl+U). In the Hue/Saturation tool, select Green from the Edit drop down menu and increase the saturation until the green areas turn black.

We now need to add a layer mask to the Background layer but before we can do this we need to unlock it. To do this, simply double-click on the layer and a New Layer window should appear. The default settings are fine. Click OK.

Add a layer mask to the layer we have just unlocked (Layer> Add Layer Mask> Reveal All).

Make sure the layer mask is activated. The thumbnail of the layer mask in the layers window should have a white border around it. If it doesn't, click on the thumbnail to activate the layer mask.

With the layer mask activated, open the Apply Image tool (Image> Apply Image). We'll be using the default settings in the Apply Image tool so simply click OK. When you turn off the Channel Mixer Layer, you should have your image on a transparent background.

Now that we're done converting the Channel Mixer layer into a layer mask, we can delete the Channel Mixer adjustment layer.

The image is masked, but most likely it will have green bits near the edges. To remove these, create a new layer (Layer> New Layer or Shift+Ctrl+N). In the Layers pallet, move the layer to the bottom.

Fill the bottom layer with a 50% gray. To do this, press Shift+Backspace and the Fill tool should appear. Select 50% Gray from the Use drop down menu and click OK.

With a 50% gray background, the green edges are clearly visible and the background will help us with the next step.

Select the top layer and open the Hue/Saturation tool (Image> Adjustments> Hue/Saturation or Ctrl+U). Select Green from the Edit drop down menu and set the saturation to -100. Immediately the green edge should disappear. If this is not the case then look below for the advice as to what to do with translucent fabric.

Now that we're done, choose the background you would like to use as the bottom layer. For you portfoliio, you don't want a background that will destract attention from your avatar so choose a neutral background. If in doubt then go for light grey. Also experiment with the gradient tool.

If you are wearing anything transparent then the green will probably be showing through the fabric as this will not be a true green.

Before making a layer mask, convert the channel mixer adjustment layer into a layer mask and add a 50% gray background.

You'll notice that some parts of the translucent fabric are still green. To fix this, activate the layer with the pic and use the Hue/Saturation tool (Image> Adjustments> Hue/Saturation or Ctrl+U) and select Greens from the Edit drop down menu.

Experiment with the sliders near between the two rainbow gradient bars. These sliders specify the color range that is being edited. The gray bar between the sliders indicate the the range and the outside two sliders specify faded range.Try to adjust these sliders so that the green disappears. If the colour range gets expanded, the green should disappear. Try moving the left slider towards the left slightly (so it goes into the yellow range) and if necessary the right slider slightly to the right.

Continue with the steps starting from creating a layer mask.

Now for adding some effects. Choose your Brush tool, and, with a huge brush selected, draw a blob in a secondary colour (lighter than the first, or use white) slightly off centre on your background layer.

Blur that layer. I use Photoshop, so I use the Gaussian Blur filter. You want it to blur way up into the 40-100 pixel range.

Now you have a background that looks like a lighted studio backdrop. You could also insert background images or patterns at this point... but I find them detracting for portfolio photos. The plain backdrop looks better and showcases the model better. However, take a look at Elisne Allen's flickr for great ideas on backgrounds.

Go back to top layer, the one with your av/model on it. Fix anywhere that the pose has distorted your avatar. Elbows, upper thighs, sometimes the neck ends up looking weird sometimes with some poses. You can fix this with your brush tool if you're careful... I recommend sampling the colours around the area with the eyedropper tool and lowering the opacity of your brush. Alternatively, you can use the Clone stamp or Healing brush tool. But I realize not all software has those tools. Lock the transparency of this layer (use the checkerboard icon on the layers palette in Photoshop) while you do this. Unlock it to erase into any white background left over... such as alpha hair ends or prim skirts.

Duplicate this layer. On the top layer, use the Dodge/Burn tools (or the equivalent in your software) to give the image a sense of drama. Start with a big brush and large areas of the av. Decrease your brush size, and go into the face, hands, etc. It's okay for this layer to look a bit silly and over the top.

Lower the Opacity of the top shading/highlight layer... until the lighting looks subtle and interesting.

Little things make an image stand out. Add a tiny white dot to the eyes to make them sparkle. Darken slightly the irises, nostrils, navel, etc. If you're wearing a sparkly dress, add some bling (keep it subtle!) If you really want to add your name to the image for modelling... keep that simple as well. I recommend, if you have a tablet, "signing" your name like a movie star. :) Or choose a simple font and keep the name subtle. It looks better than giant 32 point Brush Script all over the image. Add some stats if you're going to use it as a modelling card. 12 point sans fonts are fine for this.

For uploading inworld then save as a 24 bit Targa file or similar unless for some reason yu've used an alpha channel then it's 32 bit.

I've finally taken a bite of the proverbial bullet...I've started virtual home dressmaking...lol! It all started with my current obssesion with bright coloured tops with bows. I couldn't find what I wanted and I have no patience when it comes to shopping (hard to believe I know). So I thought, "Damn it, I'm gonna do it myself!" It took me an entire day...but this was before I found the nifty previewer, kindly given for free by Johan Durant (http://forums.secondlife.com/showthread.php?t=141938&highlight=slcp). My fashion designing life is now so much easier...tho still pretty tricky!

Any further tips will be gratefully received :)

Well, help is at hand :) You too can look like this:

A scripting buddy recently gave me an attachment set script written by Carrice Wind. This is open source so all are free to use it. I've put a copy on OnRez for free. Just search for Attachment Set OSS. It's the first time I've 'sold' anything using OnRez so any problems then please let me know.

The script works by adjusting a prim attachment in response to an avatar animation.

While wearing the skirt, right click and select “Edit”, then go to the “Contents” tab. Drag the script marked AttachmentSet OSS from your inventory to the Contents page on the edit window. Detach the skirt and then 'wear' again. The script won't work unless you do this.

Type “/66 suspend” in chat (without the quotes). The skirt will say “[name of item] animations stopped.”

Find a seat without poses or poseballs attached and, with your AO on, take a seat. If you haven't got a seat without poses then just rez a box.

Right click the skirt, select Edit from the pie chart, then hold the Ctrl key. You will see three circles. Click and move the cursor along the green circle to rotate the skirt. Or, you can try these settings and then make minor adjustments afterwards.

X: 0
Y: 28
Z: 0
You will need to reposition the skirt after this. Y will be at 0, Z will be around 118 and 165 depending on the length of the skirt (longer skirt = higher number). X you'll have to fiddle around with until the skirt looks right.

Finally, if you wish to resize the skirt hold the Ctrl and shift keys down together. You will see little white boxes. Drag one of those boxes inward or outward until the skirt is the size you like. You will need to reposition the skirt again after this.

Type “/66 set sit”. The skirt will say “Sitting position and rotation edited and reset.”

If you stand up now then the skirt will be in some crazy position. Type “/66 resume”. The skirt will say “[name of item] animations restarted.” Now, walk forward...hehe it's magic! Sit down and more magic!

You can repeat the above steps using "stand" instead of "sit", as well as "ground sit", "walk" and "run". Have fun and look good :P

I was inspired by Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver when putting together this look. It also gave me an excellent opportunity to show off one of my favourite items of clothing at the moment, the gorgeous jacket by sato Yifu of KUROTSUBAKI. I'm in love with her hippie jeans too! The textures are just so scumptiously rich, you can feel them! As for her designs, they are as sweet as chocolate biccies!

Up unitl recently I've been renting a tiny house from my lovely friend Anita Milestone. I'd been looking for land on which to put my own build but my linden bank balance isn't up to the task what with all the clothes shopping that I do...lol! At last, however, I've found a reasonable priced house near the sea...yay!I've now entered the mad world of SL interior design...trying to find decent furniture at a low prim price! It's been an almost impossible task!

My kitchen/diner:

LPHS is great for low prims but I found the designs a little crude whereas Maximum Minimum was the reverse. The designs at Maximum Minimum are actual copies of design classics...a couple I have in RL and the others I just dream I had! Avenue Four Designs is the place to go for lighting and not too primy.

I had my first modelling job on Friday...well it was more like acting. It was for a market research company who did a psychographic study of SL residents. Fascinating stuff!

Hehe...this is me! Calling out to all the gorgeous guys in SL...become a fashion model...cos look what I have to resort. It was a learning experience...there's definitely far more out there for girls in the SL fashion world. However, I think I did a pretty good job :)

Another busy week...wow!

First, my friend Princess Bachel got married to her beloved Dorren on Friday...ahh!

Bachel is Princess of Sparta within the Tiny Empires role playing game. She lives with Dorren in a huge castle, I'm forever getting lost when I visit.

It's been a busy and exciting week...wow!

Last week I did a photoshoot with the Ewing Fashion Agency photographer, Elisne Allen, on the theme of Eyes Wide Shut. Check her Flickr to see the result...I'm soo impressed :)

I've also been preparing for my graduation fashion show that is on Saturday. It's been hard work but I've thoroughly enjoyed it.

Here I am practicing my routine on the catwalk...haha

I've not done so much shopping in my life...here's one the fruits of my labour. It's by a new designer Journey McLaglen at Prism and is called 'Super Star'. Lovely tweed :)

And if that isn't enough, yesterday the Ewing Fashion Agency and the real-world talent managers, The Artist Advice held a simultaneous real-world and Second Life fashion show called First Fusion. First Fusion was filmed for Fashion 360 Television. I was one of the perfomers that were entertaining the crowds before the SL fashion show began. Fashion, work and freebies

It's been a busy few weeks. Maybe it's the time of the year but my SL friends' relationship issues have certainly been the main focus...but enough of that...hhh! The dramas of life eh?

I've recently started the Ewing Model Training Programme so I've been busy shopping for work clothes...any excuse :)

The trousers are one of the Itparica Pants Slack Set by Myllie Writer, Persona (Myllie is also half of ANIMAH) and come in the light grey that I'm wearing, dark grey and brown. The sweater is also from Persona and is part of the Tame 2 set, Plush Chi (153, 105, 22). In the pic, you can't see the earrings that I'm wearing but they are so gorgeous, I have to mention them. They are a free gift from artilleri (92, 123, 26) and have a colour changing script...so clever!

New shoes

I'm feeling particularly pleased with myself today :D. Just made some sandals for the beach...and I love hanging out at the beach...hehe. They are sooo sweet or am I just being biased about my new babies...mmm?

I made them with the help of the lovely Natalia Zelmanov (from Sirena Hair and Fashion) and her excellent tutorial...ty Natalia!

I wasn't keen on brown so I used one of the textures from the equally lovely Torley Linden. Torley has hundreds of free textures at his/her (you're a complicated av Torley :D) Watermelinden office, Grasmere 164/33/44. They really are works of art!

Mmm...I SO need a pedicure :P

Hi lovely people

I get asked a lot about my poses in-world so I thought it might be useful (I hope) to share my experience with you.

An animation overrider allows you to replace some or all of the standard animations, such as walk, stand, sit etc, that you get when you first arrive in SL, with animations of your choice. I very quickly found the standard walk animation unbearable so replaced it with a 'Sexy Female Walk' that I put in an earring, using the Francis Chung Franimation Overrider Script…ahhhh that’s better :). I now mainly use the ZHAO II that contains walk, stand and fly animations. I've not yet found any sit animations that I'm happy with so if anyone knows of any good ones...share girlfriends :D. The other major AO tool is the WetIkon. I'm going to focus on the ZHAO II cos it allows you to choose stand times, and you can have up to 12 of each animation. I wouldn't recommend this though cos you are likely to crash...oops! The ZHAO II also causes less lag but you might need to turn it off still in high lag situations, e.g. sl fashion shows.

OK, let’s get started. First, we’re gonna need to do some leg work. I would highly recommend a trip to ANIMAH Southern Paradise 50/16/2. I love their poses. The free stand poses are superb for every day use…less extreme and not all jerky compared to the usual fashion model poses. I’ve not been able to use one of the poses with my manicured nails :( but there are plenty of others to keep me happy. There are also free flying poses (I’m constantly impressing people with my graceful, wonderwoman landings…hehe).

Yadni’s Junkyard is another place for free animations…that’s where I got my walk animation from. Next stop is Winged Isle 5/163/147 for a free copy of ZHAO II.

Now for getting creative :D…you need to be somewhere you can build for this bit, so if you’re a free spirit like me and don’t have any land then you’ll have to go to a sandbox. Just put sandbox in search and you should get plenty of options.

First put the ZHAO II on the ground. It’s small so make sure you’re somewhere quiet.

Right click the ZHAO and select 'Edit' then go to ‘Contents’.

Drag your animations from your inventory into ‘Contents’.

Look for a note card in the ‘Contents’ that’s entitled ‘Default Anims’ and open. There will be a list of headings such as:

:: [ Standing ] ::

:: [ Flying Up ] ::

To the right of each heading type the EXACT name of your chosen animation. Do not leave a space between the heading and the name of the animation. Multiple animations can be separated by a vertical bar “|”. Again don’t leave a space between the name of the animation and “|”.

For Example:

:: [ Standing ] ::*MM* pose 1|*MM* pose 2

If you don’t put an animation next to a heading then the standard animation will be used.

You must then save the notecard e.g. ‘My Anims’

Take back the ZHAO II and attach to HUD. Then click the white menu button, when the menu appears click Load and select the name of the notecard you just saved. You have to do this after any amendments to the notecard. You can also select Stand Time to choose how long you want your individual stand animations to last.
